Confessions of a Cookbook Addict: A Hoarding Journey

In the age of digital recipes and cooking apps, the allure of the physical cookbook remains irresistibly strong for some. For many, cookbooks are more than just a collection of recipes—they are portals to different cultures, eras, and flavors. As a self-proclaimed cookbook addict, my shelves are brimming with volumes that share stories far beyond the kitchen. Here are my confessions, revealing why I can never have too many cookbooks.

The Beginning of the Obsession

My addiction began innocently enough. I started work at the Commonwealth Bank Port Pirie and books were left on the staffroom table to purchase. I bought my mum a copy of “The Australian Heritage Cookbook.” My mum, however, relied on her handwritten notes gathered from the backs of custard powder packets and her well-thumbed copies of the Children’s Hostible (yep, I remember the cuteness of the kid on the cover) Cookbook that the CWA sold for fundraising.

The Thrill of the Hunt

There’s a unique thrill in hunting for the next addition to my collection. Whether browsing through second-hand bookstores, exploring the shelves of a local bookshop, or scouring online retailers, finding a new cookbook is like discovering a treasure. I love a bargain of a $2 Reader’s Digest cookbook found in a dusty pile of unloved books. I believe in the circle of life as I’ll often donate just as many as I buy.

A Global Culinary Adventure

Cookbooks are my passport to the world. Through them, I’ve explored the spice markets of Marrakech, the bustling street food stalls of Bangkok, and the vineyards of Tuscany. Each book offers a taste of a different culture, complete with stories and traditions that enrich my understanding of global cuisine. Mary Berry transports me to English stately homes indulging in a High Tea whilst Nadiya Hussain tells stories of her Bangladeshi heritage.

The Comfort of Familiar Pages

While new cookbooks bring excitement, there’s a certain comfort in returning to familiar pages. Some cookbooks are like old friends, their worn covers, and splattered pages a testament to the many meals we’ve shared. The Women’s Weekly Cakes and Biscuits cookbook is one such friend, with its reliable, comforting recipes that never fail to impress. When I need a guaranteed success, I know exactly where to turn.

An Artistic Affair

For me, cookbooks are not just about recipes—they are works of art. The beautiful photography, meticulous layout, and engaging content combine to create something truly special. I can spend hours lost in the pages of Indian cookbooks admiring the stunning visuals and detailed illustrations that bring Indian cuisine to life. The visual pleasure of a well-designed cookbook is a joy in itself.

A Learning Experience

Every cookbook is a learning opportunity. Whether it’s mastering the art of sourdough with Chad Robertson’s “Tartine Bread” or perfecting French pastry with “Pastry School” by Le Cordon Bleu, each book challenges me to expand my culinary skills. Cookbooks push me out of my comfort zone, encouraging experimentation and growth in the kitchen.

Building a Legacy

My collection is more than a personal indulgence—it’s a legacy. Each cookbook tells a part of my culinary journey, and I hope to pass this collection on to future generations. My dream is that my children and grandchildren will find inspiration in these books, just as I have, and continue to explore the world through the lens of food.

Balancing Passion and Practicality

Of course, being a cookbook addict has its challenges. Shelf space is always at a premium, and I often have to get creative with storage solutions. I’ve also learned to balance my passion with practicality, ensuring that I actually cook from my collection rather than letting the books gather dust. Rotating cookbooks and setting monthly themes help keep things fresh and ensure that each book gets its moment in the spotlight.

Conclusion: Embracing the Addiction

Being a cookbook addict is about more than just collecting books—it’s about celebrating the joy of cooking, the beauty of global cuisines, and the endless possibilities that each new recipe brings. My addiction has made me a better cook, a more adventurous eater, and a lifelong learner. So, to my fellow cookbook addicts out there, I say embrace your passion. There’s always room for one more book on the shelf and countless culinary adventures waiting to be discovered.

Michelle Boyd catered for our wedding ceremony, and the food was absolutely incredible! We had a few guests with dietary needs, and Michelle made sure every dish was not only delicious but also met everyone’s requirements. I’ve been lucky enough to taste Michelle’s food on several occasions, and I always look forward to seeing what amazing dishes she creates. My husband and I also bought a Thermomix from Michelle, and she came to our home for a demonstration. We use the Thermomix all the time now, and the recipes she shared with us are regulars in our meals. We’re so excited to learn more from Michelle and can’t wait to attend one of her dinner events soon!

Last week I attended Michelle’s Real Food Dinner -Gut health edition. Michelle informed us with very valuable information about gut health and how we can look after our gut by eating food with a higher fibre content. She prepared some beautiful tasty dishes show casing some great gut health foods. I highly recommended attending these nights when they come available. It was a fun night of information, chats and yummy food. Thank you Michelle. Can’t wait to see what you will be presenting next.

YumHugs catered for my 70th birthday tea at a local hall. Michelle and Ian came and plated up the delicious finger food and served it too, so I didn't have so much to organise and could spend time with my guests. The food was amazing and their calming presence made the event so much better! They even packed up the left overs. Yum Hugs is great and Michelle and Ian are wonderful!

I attended Michelle’s first Real Food Dinner - Gut Health Edition as I wanted to learn more about gut health and options for switching up my diet. I received all that and more! Not only was Michelle very knowledgeable about the subject but she also cooked a variety of high fibre, and very delicious dishes for us to try. I had a great evening and can highly recommend the experience to anyone with an interest in food and talking about food! Michelle also produces some amazing sweet treats and my favourite - the energy seed bars. Thankyou Michelle!
