Cooking with the Seasons: A Beginner’s Guide

Cooking with the seasons is a practice that embraces the use of fresh, local ingredients at their peak. Not only does this approach enhance the flavor and nutritional value of your meals, but it also supports Australian farmers and promotes sustainability. For those new to the concept of seasonal cooking, this guide will introduce you to the basics and provide practical tips to get you started.

Why Cook with the Seasons?

Flavour and Freshness: Seasonal ingredients are harvested at their peak ripeness, offering superior taste and texture compared to out-of-season produce.

Nutritional Benefits: Foods that are in season are generally more nutrient-dense, as they haven’t been stored for long periods in cold storage (e.g., apples in summer) or travelled long distances.

Environmental Impact: Eating seasonally reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting and storing out-of-season foods. It also encourages sustainable farming practices.

Economic Support: Purchasing seasonal produce from local farmers helps support the local economy and ensures farmers receive fair prices for their crops.

Understanding Seasonal Produce

Seasonal produce varies depending on your geographical location and climate. However, there are general guidelines for what’s in season during different times of the year:

Summer: This season brings a bounty of tomatoes, zucchini, rocket, cucumbers, capsicums, corn, berries, peaches, and melons.

Autumn: Enjoy root vegetables such as carrots, beets, and sweet potatoes, as well as pumpkins, apples, blackberries, and pears.

Winter: Seek out hearty greens like kale and collards, along with citrus fruits, root vegetables, and winter squash.

Spring: Look for fresh greens like spinach, silverbeet, and lettuce, along with asparagus, peas, radishes, and berries.

Getting Started with Seasonal Cooking

  1. Visit Local Farmers’ Markets: Farmers’ markets are a great place to find fresh, seasonal produce. Engage with vendors to learn about what’s currently in season and get tips on how to prepare different items. There are markets at Adelaide Showgrounds, Willunga, Mt Barker, Old Spot, Parafield Airport, and Pooraka in the Adelaide Metro area.
  2. Plan Your Meals Around Seasonal Ingredients: Start by incorporating one or two seasonal ingredients into your weekly meal plan. Look for recipes that highlight these ingredients to make the most of their flavors. Coles and Woolworths have free magazines which highlight seasonal recipes.
  3. Grow Your Own Produce: If you have the space, consider starting a small garden. Growing your own vegetables and herbs can be a rewarding way to enjoy the freshest possible produce. Herbs are simple to grow in pots on a windowsill in your kitchen.
  4. Preserve Seasonal Produce: Learn techniques for canning, freezing, or drying seasonal produce so you can enjoy it year-round. This can be especially useful for fruits and vegetables that have a short peak season. What’s a Gin & Tonic without a slice of dried lime or lemon?
  5. Experiment with New Recipes: Seasonal cooking is a great opportunity to try new recipes and experiment with different flavors. Look for cookbooks or online resources that focus on seasonal cuisine.

Michelle Boyd catered for our wedding ceremony, and the food was absolutely incredible! We had a few guests with dietary needs, and Michelle made sure every dish was not only delicious but also met everyone’s requirements. I’ve been lucky enough to taste Michelle’s food on several occasions, and I always look forward to seeing what amazing dishes she creates. My husband and I also bought a Thermomix from Michelle, and she came to our home for a demonstration. We use the Thermomix all the time now, and the recipes she shared with us are regulars in our meals. We’re so excited to learn more from Michelle and can’t wait to attend one of her dinner events soon!

Last week I attended Michelle’s Real Food Dinner -Gut health edition. Michelle informed us with very valuable information about gut health and how we can look after our gut by eating food with a higher fibre content. She prepared some beautiful tasty dishes show casing some great gut health foods. I highly recommended attending these nights when they come available. It was a fun night of information, chats and yummy food. Thank you Michelle. Can’t wait to see what you will be presenting next.

YumHugs catered for my 70th birthday tea at a local hall. Michelle and Ian came and plated up the delicious finger food and served it too, so I didn't have so much to organise and could spend time with my guests. The food was amazing and their calming presence made the event so much better! They even packed up the left overs. Yum Hugs is great and Michelle and Ian are wonderful!
